"Another way that we can help prepare our horses and our new riders for the speed and the fun of team penning sport is to allow them to have the experience of figuring out how to catch those angles. To put together the speed of the cow, the speed of the horse and where we want to meet up. In our sport, we often have to go back and quickly catch what we call " a trash cow" or a good numbered cow and so this little exercise gives the rider an opportunity to watch the cow closely without being under the pressure of the sixty second clock and see if they can't create the environment where they are going to beat that cow. I am going to try and bring a cow around and position it so Laura has to choose her angle and the speed of her horse to figure out where to get that cow. (Pushing the cow.) And that would be a very good example of some of the skill that we need to take to our competitive team penning arena where Laura had to judge the speed of the cow, how quick it was trying to return to the herd and save that cow so that we could go on to pen in a good time."
