Growing Lavender

"Hi, I'm Stan DeFreitas, "Mr. Green Thumb". You know one of the herbs that we use quite often for fragrance is that of the lavender. And lavender is one of those flowers that has a very nice aroma, both in the foliage and in the flower. It has kind of a purpley blue flower, and you can see here that this plant is going to be a plant that gets to be a medium sized plant. It can kind of be used in an area where you might have it hanging over as an ornamental, of course and you may also want to break the foliage for the lavender type aroma. It's not one that we use in the kitchen very much, but it's one that you're going to use as a plant that you're going to have as a fragrant pretty plant. So you might have it in a porch or patio, you might have it in an area where you're going to be using it just to break a few leaves on occasion. The lavender likes a well drained soil, so make sure you have an extra amount of pearlite, and of course also some peat to hold some of the moisture. It's a fine line with like so many plants, you don't want it to get overly dry, or it tends to start to- well it will die, or if it gets too, too wet, you're going to get into some root fungus problems, and it may not do that well either. You want to make sure that lavender is one getting a near full sun, and it's also a plant that you want to protect before getting down below freezing condition, so be able to bring it into a protected area, if you do have an area where you have below freezing temperatures. Lavender is one of those plants that you can have and use, and enjoy for a good long time in the landscape. When using lavender, of course make sure you have it in an area with a bunch of other plants, and it'll do real well for you as a good herb. For on Gardening, I'm Stan DeFreitas, "Mr. Green Thumb"."
