"How to avoid an IRS audit. You want to make sure that all of the information that you're submitting on your income tax return agrees with the information that the IRS is going to be receiving from third party sources. If your information submitted on your return does not agree with third party sources, you could receive an IRS audit notice or an IRS letter that explains adjustments that the IRS is proposing to your return. It doesn't necessarily mean that you will be asked to come to an IRS office, but you'll be asked to explain the differences that have been reported on your return that the IRS has received different information. So, you do want to make sure that if you received this form, you go through your return and make sure that the information reported to the IRS was correct and then evaluate how the information was reported on your return. To help avoid the IRS audit, you want to make sure that you've done this before you submit your return. If you know that you're missing W2 forms, 1099 statements, 1098 statements, try to obtain those before preparing your return so that the information you enter on your return agrees to what the IRS is going to receive that's been submitted from third parties. This will help you avoid the IRS audit."
