Just by looking at this, I'm seeing very definite tree shapes. Once you've got your shapes cut out and you don't glue them anywhere, you have all kinds of options open to you, and I want you to really think about this as something you can play with. I've just turned that around, now it's no longer about trees. I've used the tree shapes, I found a tree shape, I found directions, but now I'm playing with this direction, I'm playing with that direction. Curves are very good directional kinds of lines, and I have these curves and then I have these like sharp little triangles here, and I'm sort of starting creating a tension that I kind of like. So let yourself move these around, it's a little bit like having an instant, it's easier than taking pictures actually. You can take a dozen pictures and get lots of different views of your trees, but this way you can really play around with bigger and bigger and more different ideas. And that's what you want to do in these field exercises is really get a feel for the shape that you've got and the shapes you can put in it. There's another one like that, I don't like that, maybe I'll try it like that and I've got this repetition going on, but I'm really responding to my field and sometimes that's easier to do on black and it's easier to do once you kind of let things go and just start saying "What if"?
