Video: Design Texture: Shellac

Shellac is used as a design texture because it repels ink to create a textured surface. Use shellac as a design media with tips from an artist in this free design video.

Working some more with the idea of surfaces repelling other surfaces, we're going to use, work with ink this time and white Shellac. You buy this at the local hardware store. You want the clear Shellac, It comes in clear and, and orange and you want clear usually. You can have orange but you can see this is clear and it already is kind of yellows the white of the page. So you want a clear and you want a board as opposed to a piece of paper. You need a little bit more of, of a firmer surface so you, you need a board as opposed to a piece of paper. And you need a throw away; you may as well have a throw away brush. It's hard to clean out Shellac, you need alcohol, denatured alcohol if you're are going to clean out Shellac. It dries very quickly and so you can't do a very big area at a time because you're going to come in here with the ink as soon as you've got the Shellac on pretty much. You, you don't want it to puddle like that and as soon as you've pretty much got it on you're going to lay on your ink and you can see that it's already repelling. You can see that you're going to get a very interesting texture there. Now I'm going to lay the ink on a little heavier and you can get the circular kinds of marks by dropping in drops of the Shellac. And you can see that they're starting to repel and making these interesting sort of spots. They're almost like cells that are, are starting to, to multiply.
