Video: Grids for Paintings: Elongated Patterns

Another way to use the grid is to distort things. And I have a quick demonstration here for you. I went ahead and made a tracing of a face here, just the basic, where the nose, mouth and so on were. And I went ahead and put a grid over it. What I did in this picture is I decided I wanted to distort the face, so first I distorted the grid. I made it wider at the center line and I made it smaller towards the ends. And when I plotted each of these items, and again, you can plot it here this eyebrow is down here in the second grid, and it starts very close to the end and it works its way up. So that's how I knew where to place that. Of course, in this, because this is a much wider space than this, the eyebrow ends up at a slightly different angle. So you can see the difference here between these two faces. This one gets very kind of, like it was smushed. I tried it again to see what would happen with the face if I went ahead and made the grid longer. In other words, if I elongated the face. So did the same thing. I went back and I organized and I said, well, where's the mouth? The mouth is along this bottom line here so I've got that right. But notice what happens of course because this is elongated, there's a whole, it turns out to be a whole lot more space the farther you make your way up and you've got this enormous forehead. It's still basically two increments but we have stretched it with the grid.
