"Okay, let's play some scales on the bass. We're going to play these same things a little different way. One thing about the bass, the strings are tuned four notes apart. You have E, A, D, and G. If we count up from D, you have D, E, F, G, four notes. That means once you go up four notes on the D string, you're getting to notes that also are on the G string. You've probably noticed D, E, F sharp, G, A. And over here we have G, A. So, we can play this same pattern without shifting. What we're going to do is play it on two strings. Starting first with the open D, then E with the first finger, F sharp, go to the open G string, and first finger for A. Let's try that first with the fingers then with the bow. One, two, ready, begin. D, E, F sharp, G, A, G, F sharp, E, D. And we'll work on the next ones practicing with the bow and the fingers."
