Ceramics are art works made out of clay bodies that harden with the application of heat. Originating in Chinese, Cretan, Greek, Roman, and Mayan cultures, ceramics have a long history that dates back to the third millennium BC. Potters most traditionally use their hands, but several tools have been developed to aid in the ceramic making process. Ceramics range from functional vessels to decorative sculptures, and remain both a long loved craft as well as a fine art. Getting prepared to begin pottery making requires specific tools and techniques. In these videos, a master potter teaches you about the proper tools for basic pottery, as well as correct preparation and maintenance of clay and studio space. Learn what you need to start throwing pots in this free pottery setup video series.
"The first thing that you want to have is a nice set of clean tools and if you don't have clean tools, you are not going to have clean pots. So what you want to do is get your nice dirty tools from the last time you had thrown and I like to use as little tools as possible and we are going to start off with a needle tool, a rubber rib, or a kidney, a natural sponge, a potter's knife and a trimming tool. Now you get rid of all the unnecessary tools and get your water and there we go. Let them do their thing for a little bit and when they are ready we'll come back and clean them off."
