Video Transcript

"Stay. Stay. We're going to talk about how to keep your dog from begging at dinner. One of the fundamental things you need to do is not feed your dog treats from the table. All dogs can smell food and so they're going to be interested by food even if they've never eaten any of your prepared chicken or meat or vegetables. But if they get used to the idea that by coming to the table and giving attention to the people at the table they will be rewarded for that then they'll continue that behavior. The best thing to do to prevent this behavior is to never start feeding them at the table, and then practice a different behavior that is incompatible with begging at the table. An example would be a polite down, stay. Some distance away from the table maybe in another room at the doorway so they can still see you. Another tip would be to feed your dog before so that your dog isn't hungry when food is being prepared, and you can also manage the behavior by placing your dog in a crate in another room so that they can't actually practice that behavior, and that might be something you would do with a dog who has already learned to beg from the table until you have a nice reliable down stay."
