"Hello, my name is Nancy Frensley the training manager at the Berkeley East Bay Main Society in Berkeley, California and we're here to talk about raising a Saint Bernard. Now, if you are a lover of the giant breeds of dogs, a Saint Bernard may be the one for you. They are incredibly sweet, affectionate, wonderful happy dogs as a rule. They are also very, very, very large. So, it's important to remember that you must start training from the day your puppy comes in the house and you start training so your puppy response to your voice because once that puppy is about six or eight months old, you're not going to be able to take them anywhere. They're going to take you everywhere if you haven't done your foundation work with them. So, they got great size. They have to be fed a diet that's suitable for a dog with very large bones who's a fast grower and they have to have moderate exercise. Appropriate exercises for Saint Bernards could be walking, could be hiking, could be even some mild weight pulling but your basic Saint Bernard is not going to be a runner. They're not going to run every place after they're about a year old. You're going to love your Saint Bernard but get that training and that leadership in right from the beginning."
