"A lot of people want ways to keep their dog from barking. They call me on the phone and they say, please help me my dog is barking, I want my dog to stop barking. Well it's a little bit tricky because it's a lot easier to teach your dog what to do instead of what not to do. So first and foremost thing you need to do is work with your dog about barking issues is to reinforce and reward silence. Make quietness a really cool thing for your dog to do. Another thing to do is to teach your dog to do another behavior besides barking. In terms of barking you really need to figure out, what it is that's causing your dog to bark. And you need to train your dog around each and every one of the barking triggers. So a lot of dogs bark, bark, bark, bark, bark when somebody comes to the door. And one of the most effective ways to teach your dog what to do when people come to the door, come on, come here is to teach go get your toy. Go get your toy. Get your toy. Bring it here, come on. Good girl. So a dog that's walking around with a toy in his mouth is usually not barking he's doing something else. So go get your toy. Alright. Another good way to start teaching your dog what to do when people come in is to take your dog and put your dog on a tie down. What I have here on the floor is a little, is a floor tie down, you can do this by putting the eye ring in a stud in your wall ok. And as soon as somebody comes to the door, here come here, come on puppy. Lolly come. Good. Put your dog on the tie down and as people come in give your dog treats. Good dog, thank you. You are being so quiet when people come in. That is so good. A dog that is eating something and paying attention to you, is not barking. And for almost anything that your dog does that you don't like, cookie therapy is a very, very, very good approach to take."
