Shin splints are actually pain on the shin caused from the muscle pulling at the bone from excessive impact, high impact running and it can be very painful and if left untreated it can actually become a long term problem for the person. There are many approaches to treating shin splints. First of all it is important to ice the shins because there is a lot of inflammation going on. One useful technique is called ice cube massage where you take an ice cube and massage the shin until the ice cube melts and that is a good gage of making sure you are not going too long and if you over ice an area you can actually aggravate inflammation. Another thing is to make sure that your shoes have proper support because it is the jarring impact that causes a lot of the damage. So make sure you have good supportive shoes and it is also helpful to use some sort of a compression sleeve when running so this one is actually made specifically for shin splints. You can tighten it up on the bottom or the top sections and they're very tight. The tighter they are the more effective they will be with the shin splints so it is not something to wear all day long only when you are actually running and that is how you treat shin splints."
