"Let's talk for a minute about fire ants. When you're out in the wilderness you might encounter a situation where you've been bitten by a fire ant. Typically, what you want to do in this situation is clean the area as soon as possible. I have small alcohol pads which I carry in my wilderness first-aid kit. So typically, what you're going to want to do is take out the alcohol pad and gently swab the area. It will probably be pretty painful, but you've got to make sure that you clean it off very well. And once you've cleaned it off there's not a whole lot you can do in terms of pain relief. There are some products that are sold to relieve stings and pains from bites, but typically I have found that those don't actually work very well, so what I do at this point is I cover it with a small band-aid to prevent infection, and also to prevent you from scratching it. After a while it will start to itch, but you want to make sure you don't scratch it because that can lead to infection, so typically if you clean it off, cover it with a band-aid, and just try to forget about it that's pretty much your best bet."
