Joel Hickerson, grindog.com. Today we're going to learn how to draw a fairy. The first thing you need to think about, what kind of a fairy are you/we drawing here? 'Cause there's a, there's a million of them and pretty much, they're fantasy being, so it leaves it wide open. So what my fairy's going to look like is very similar to a butterfly. So I want to leave room on both sides of the figure for the wings, so I'll do a, I'll do a line of action, and then I'll kind of flesh out how the wings are going to look. Then I come back, and I'd do his head, the body, the legs, just kind of flesh out where they're going to be. Now what I'm doing is I'm drawing in pencil, so I can come back later with a marker, a darker pencil, or even a a paintbrush and pick the lines that I just want to use. So, since he's like a butterfly, a butterfly wings are constructed into two pieces. And you have a big piece on the top, and a small piece on the bottom. So we'll come in and add a little decoration for the wings. A very flowing fairy. Okay, and now I've got enough construction lines that I can go straight to the marker and start picking out the lines, possibly that I want to keep. So we've got our little fairy's face. We could maybe make him look like he's up to something, mischievous little fellas that they are. Pointed ears seem to be a fairy trade mark. You've got kind of thee old gnome hat, could be flowing off behind him. And again, these are fantasy items, so, or fantasy beings, so you can make this fairy pretty much however you want. There are no rules, I'm sure. So you put his hands together. He's flying. I'm going to put clothes on my fairy. I'm sure there are naked fairies out there too. Little pointy shoes. Again with the wings, and again these construction lines, they're merely guides or even suggestions of how you want it to look. So as you draw, you may choose to correct the lines, or even embellish a little bit. And the big wings that are very similar to a butterfly, so you might decorate 'em similar to a butterfly too. Okay, now if I've done my job and on my construction lines, have done them lightly enough, they should come of very easily once I start erasing, okay? So as I get rid of my construction lines, I want to think about what I'll be doing next, and generally, what you'll do next is find your light source, and your shadows and you come back, and I'm just going to do the top half of this guy. You may create rosy cheeks, shadows, lips, maybe a collar, but you basically come back in after you started it, and draw the details, okay? But that's a good start to your fairy. The rest is up to you. And that's how you draw a fairy.
