"Joel Hickerson, grindog.com. Today we're going to draw animals. First thing you want to think about is what kind of animal you're about to draw. Now if it's a, if it's a giraffe you're going to want to turn your pad straight up vertical. If it's a wiener dog you might want to turn it sideways. The same thing with a giraffe, if you have a vertical piece of paper you better draw the biggest part of your giraffe first, so you draw the body. And then you want to think about where the head's going to go next. O.k. if you draw your body way up at the top of your page, you're not going to have any room for your head. So draw your head and you've got your giraffe. Then you've got enough room for this giraffe this way. It's a wiener dog you're going to turn your page sideways. The body is long but you still have to leave room for his head, o.k. And the four legs are short little legs so you don't want to put the body too close to the bottom but you don't have to put it too close to the top either, o.k. But the one thing to think about is also what makes that animal what he is. Now wiener dog's real easy, he's just a long dog. A giraffe, easy too. It's a very tall animal. But if you're drawing a horse what makes that horse a horse? Is it the body? Or one thing very specific to a horse is the hooves. The tail has got all kinds of stuff on it. And the neck; curved neck. The head is made in three, three parts and has pointy ears. And also the head and the tail; to me a horse is all about the mane and the hooves, and the nose. That right there you know is a horse, even though you haven't fleshed out eyes or anything else. So the things to think about, one is spatial arrangement, which which direction you turn your page. Also what makes this wiener dog a wiener dog, the length? Or this giraffe a giraffe, the height or maybe spots too. Or a horse a horse? And that would be a mane, hooves and a tail. Maybe the nose too. And that's how you draw animals."
