"I'm Nancy Frensley. I'm the training manager at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society, and we're going to talk now about Miniature Dachshunds. Caring for your Miniature Dachshund is a lot like caring for your regular Dachshund, except the big difference is your Miniature Dachshund is really, really much smaller than a regular sized Dachshund. They don't tend to have the difficulty with their lower backs that the larger Dachshunds have, but they will still have some of that problem. You know, with a dog that small, one of the things that you really have to be careful about in your home is that they don't get stepped on. The like to be around you, and they'll hang around your feet, but, it's really, really easy to step on them. And this is an accident that happens to quite a few of them. So, in terms of care, your Miniature Dachshund needs food that has small bites, and a lot of the pet food companies now make foods that have a small enough kibble for a miniature dog to eat. They don't need a lot of coat care, but they do need care that they're not getting injured or dropped. So, they may not be the best Dachshund to be in a home with small children. Perhaps your regular sized ones would be a little better for that. Otherwise, happy little pets. Love to go with you. Like to be carried around in little carriers. And, they certainly don't mind wearing stylish jackets."
