"Hi, I'm Nancy Frensley, I'm the training manager at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society, and I have my friend Lolly here, who's going to help me talk about Cocker Spaniels. The Cocker Spaniel has been around for, Oh, many centuries as a pet dog. You can see Cocker Spaniels, and Toy Spaniels of all kinds in, in very, very old paintings, drawings. And they've always kind of been a house dog. These days, your Cocker Spaniel in terms of care, usually needs a lot of coat care. Many of them have big, heavy, shaggy coats that need regular grooming. And that grooming is best done by a professional. The other thing that you're going to have to really work on with your, with your Cocker Spaniel is keeping the ears clean and free of infection. The large drop-ear, tends to lend itself to ear infections. So, you need to check your Cocker Spaniel's ears on a regular basis, once or twice a week, smell them, look in them, and if there's any sign of infection, or your dog is shaking his head, you'll definitely want to get to a veterinarian. Other than that, Cocker Spaniels can be extremely sweet and lovely house dogs, they do need a moderate amount of exercise, not a lot and they do really well if you give them good mental exercise and good obedience training."
