"How does temperature affect fruit? Well, temperature plays a very important role on the way that fruit is ripened. Believe it or not, when you leave your fruits outside of the refrigerator, they will not ripen as fast because fruit has a natural tendency to throw off ethylene gas and the ethylene gas is what makes your fruit ripen faster. So when all your fruits are placed in your refrigerator, then the cold air almost traps this gas inside which makes your lettuce turn brown faster, your bananas ripen faster, your tomatoes get mushy, so the best thing to do with your fruit is to leave it outside, providing if you have a fruit bowl like this that allows the air to circulate around, your fruit will last a lot longer. Now, you might not want to keep your fruit out on the counter, so go ahead and put your fruit in your refrigerator in the crisper drawer, and drop one of these discs in. You simply pull off the back, date it and this absorbs all the ethylene gas that is being produced naturally. So, your fruit will ripen a lot slower, therefore, your fruit will last a lot longer. I'm Jan from Kitchen Kitchen."
