"Hi my name is Pat Goodwin with Pat Goodwin Associates. Today we want to talk about how does gender discrimination lead to stereotypes. When I think about gender discrimination leading to stereotypes, I begin to think about a workplace that is typically male or female and then there is an opportunity to hire someone else and they look at maybe hiring someone for the first time in that organization who may be of the opposite sex. So gender discrimination leading to stereotypes is something that you want to very cautious about. There are many times that a female can do the job of a male and you look at companies where there is many males doing outside jobs whether that be climbing telephone poles or doing electrical work on your power lines, that is a type of job that has been typically designed for men but you will notice and see that there are women that are being trained for that type of job. Years past you might think of a teacher that would be a female and then as times have passed there are excellent teachers that are men teachers or male teachers who are working in the classroom setting that have been outstanding. So we want to make sure that the industry itself does not get stereotyped based on the gender. There could be surgeons or types of nurses. One of the fields that is growing really well today is male nurses. When typically women have been stereotyped in the nursing field, you will see that particular profession is being now absorbed by men who are excellent at being male nurses. So occupational therapists, a lot of jobs that have been stereotyped in one gender are now being opened up to other genders. So let's be careful to not eliminate someone based on gender and consider them for the role, the job, the skills that's needed and giving them equal opportunity to interview for the job and making a decision about who is the best fit for the job and who has the best skills. Thank you."
