"Hi my name is Pat Goodwin with Pat Goodwin Associates. The question today is what is employee performance appraisal. The actual performance appraisal is given to employees during a time of year when it is appropriate for the manager or the company to evaluate the performance of that individual. There are many types of performance appraisals that can be offered to an individual. There could be a 360 that's offered when that individual will answer questions based on the work itself, they will then ask fellow employees, colleagues, their manager, someone maybe in HR or another department who would also fill out a 360 based on that same individual. Then they would receive feedback based on their work performance, their attitude, they're taking initiative, their ability to do the job, their competency in doing the job, whether they're creative, strategic, what is their attitude as far as being approachable, whether they're aloof or approachable. So it drills into the person's performance as well as who the person is and how that person behaves. Then there could be a performance appraisal that would be just on the skills of the individual. So you could be a manufacturing company when they do a performance appraisal based on skills only, it could be the aptitude to work a machine or the aptitude to make a product and when you're in a highly sensitive secure environment and there are dangerous tools around or dangerous chemicals, it could be the performance appraisal is based on just the skills alone. Most often than not though, they're going to be looking at not only their skills and how well they do their job based on their skills, but how are they doing their job, how are they actually performing their jobs, are there mistakes made, if so, how have those mistakes been resolved, what is their attitude in the workplace and how have they addressed issues such as harmony in the workplace or diversity in the workplace. So there may be some issues that would need to be addressed to that employee once the performance appraisal is over, so the employee would have a road map to improve, a road map to continue to improve or a road map to greatly improve or they would then be removed from the job if they do not show significant improvement within a certain length of time. So basically the performance appraisal is really good, it keeps everybody checked with how well they're doing, how, what they can expect for maybe the future job and then how they can perform at a higher level based on the feedback that they get from the appraisal."
