"What is Root Canal procedure? Hi I'm Dr. David Wagner, a dentist at NorthWood Dental in Clearwater, FL; and I'm going to talk to you today about what is the procedure for doing a Root Canal. A Root Canal has to do with a treatment down inside the root of a tooth. Here I'm showing a tooth that's been infected with a cavity and created infection down inside the root going out into the jaw bone. What this does it proceeds and causes the pulp of the nerve inside the tooth to die and become necrotic or dead and needs to be cleaned out so that the infection is removed from the tooth. We use special small instruments that go down inside the tooth and clean and shape the inside of this tooth, so that we can disinfect it and then have a path or an avenue to then place a special filling that seals the side of the root and actually seals it at the apex so that the bone or the body can heal around it. So here you can see with the infection present there's a breakdown of the bone but once it's been cleaned out and then sealed the bone can actually heal back in and you have then a successful Root Canal treatment. Now don't forget about the crown that goes on afterwards, because this now is what we call a non vital or a dead tooth and it's subject to chipping or breaking so you still need to protect this tooth after the Root Canal is done. So that's how a Root Canal is done. I'm Dr. David Wagner, NorthWood Dental; ClearWater, FL."
