"Hi, I'm going to talk to you today, about what is gum disease also known as periodontal disease. I'm Dr. David Wagner, Northwood Dental, Clearwater, Florida. Gum disease is an inflammation and infection of the gums surrounding the teeth, and that cover the bones and supporting tissues, of the teeth. Here, you can see a representation of a tooth, and an accumulation of plaque and debris around the tooth, which is causing a separation, an infection, and irritation of the gums, that pushes the gums away from the tooth. This would be the classic signs of gum disease, in the progress of the disease. As the disease progresses, it goes down deeper, and actually causes destruction of the bone underlying, which then can lead to eventual loss of the teeth, and prior to that, there could be some discomfort in chewing, bad breath, bleeding of the gums, and discoloration of the gums, many of the things that we commonly see, associated with gum disease. That's what gum disease is. I'm Dr. David Wagner, Northwood Dental, Clearwater, Florida."
