Large Relief Printmaking Problems

Moving from a small block of wood to a large block of wood makes it exponentially more difficult in all of the different areas of printmaking. Certainly registering your print, the amount of time and energy to carve that block of print, the different compositional elements of your print. So keep in mind that you will, if you double the size of your image, it will not just double the difficulty, it will quadruple it. It will become an exponentially more complex print. But even so, those challenges can be rewarding. And working on this scale and in this size gives you a lot of opportunity for really experimenting with the blocks, and really experimenting with your printing process. Here in this image I used this single block of wood over here, inking these areas separately from the rest of the wood in the kind of a more painterly way. So that when it is printed, you can see that I have with one printing, this is several printings on this piece of paper. But at the same time, this blue area and this lighter blue area was printed at the same time. Therefore with this large area and being able to use my brayer more like a brush, I'm able to get some more interesting elements into the print, and be a bit more free with the way that I interact with it and print with it.
