"Hi, my name's Laura and I'm form youngwritersworkshops.com and I'm going to talk about what is the purpose of a Magnet school. A Magnet school was originally designed to combat segregation by drawing people from not just one neighborhood but many neighborhoods. And that's basically the definition of a Magnet schools is one with a specialized curriculum or focus and it draws from across different areas of a district, so that it's not just a neighborhood school. Often Magnet schools have a mission process that includes an audition or a portfolio review if it, in the case of an art school. There could be also Magnet schools that use a lottery process and that process is generally random. You just apply and then students who will be selected to attend the school are chosen at random. Now Magnet schools are different than Charter schools. There are Charter schools that have a specific course of curriculum and those schools would be different than a Magnet school because they're not run by a district. They're still free and open to the public and usually have an application process but are different from Magnet schools. So the important thing to remember about Magnets schools is it's focused on one type of curriculum. It might have an arts focus or technology focus or science focus. But it is open to people from across the district and generally uses an admission process. That means you must apply to attend. And that's a little bit about what is the purpose of a Magnet school."
