"Hi. I'm Laura from youngwritersworkshops.com. And I'm going to talk about how to begin homeschooling in northern California. There's a few things you need to know in California, in general, there are four options for starting a home school. And you can get the legal specifics from the California Department of Education or there's several other resources online where you can find out the legal ramifications of homeschooling in California. But you basically need to make the decision whether you'd like to file as create your own private school, or become a tutor for your children, or do homeschooling through a satellite program with some other families, or there's a fourth option that you could investigate. As a homeschooling family, you'll want to find ways to create social situations, have social learning available for your children. And some of the best ways to do that are to join a co-op or find an online community that's based in your area that will allow you to plan activities and experiences that your kids can share with other homeschooling families. You'll also want to make sure that you have a curriculum that really works for you. And you can also get feedback from other families by being part of a community. Find out what's worked for other people, and use that so you don't have to re-learn and make the same mistakes that other people have already made. Another important thing for you to do is to know what the required compulsory school calendar is for your state. You actually do have a certain number of days of schooling that you're supposed to supply. And in California, you have some required subjects. So you need to become aware of that and make sure that you are teaching the required subjects that are required by the state. So all of that is information that you can find online. And also online or in-person, you can find some groups that will help you support your kids in social learning and make your home school experience more interesting and fun."
