Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen, and in this segment we're going to learn all about how to grow lemon balm or Melissa or bee balm, it's a gorgeous plant that's easy to grow. Melissa is a hardy plant which belongs to the mint family, so they're related to mint, they're actually an herb, and they have- they're native to Europe and Central Asia, so they're really easy to grow in zones 5 to 9, they're very hardy. But not in the coldest of climates, you have to bring them inside. They have small heart shaped leaves that are crushed and then there's a lemon scent is released, and they just smell really good, that's why they're called lemon balm. And they have flowers that come up in the summer that are white and yellow that are just gorgeous. You can start lemon balm or bee balm or Melissa, in the spring by seed or root division. Because they're a mint, they're just related to mint, as long as you have part of a root and part of a stem you can break that off and you can start a new plant, pretty much anytime of the year. And as they grow and mature if they look ratty in any way you can trim them back down and they'll fill right up again. They're a really easy plant to grow, and as long as you give them a sunny spot with lots of water in the summer, but they don't want to be too wet in the winter either, they'll do really well, and they're like other herbs, they'll just do their thing. You just plant them and forget them and you can enjoy them. And because they have such a nice fragrant you can cut them and put them in flower arrangements or just put them inside the house, so your house can smell like lemons. It's just a gorgeous addition to your herb garden.
