Relief print making is the process where anything that's below the surface is not inked. And, what is on the surface, is inked. And, how that works is, by using a brayer in Western style relief print making, the brayer is going to put a layer of ink on the surface of your wood, but it will not be able to get into any of the lines that have been carved away, like it has on this wood block. So, therefore, the simple explanation of what a relief print is, is that anything that's below the surface and does not pick up ink, and everything that is on the surface is inked, and therefore that is what a relief print is. In the realm of relief print making, there are many different varieties. There is a Western tradition and a Japanese tradition. The earliest print making tradition is the Japanese tradition and one of the oldest forms of print making that there is. There is a very small amount of cultural knowledge about the relief print out there, simply because it is, it is not something you learn in school. It's very often, because it is so complicated.
