"Baiting your dog is important with any dog trick just to assure attention. My goal with all of my training is just to start with food and end with physical touch and verbal praise. The command now is catch a treat so I want to bait the dogs so they know I am going to want attention. After your dog gives you the attention you know that you can move to the next step. I generally like to use my dog's normal dry dog food Kibble for bait in. It smells just as good as a treat and they like it just the same. If it is a stubborn dog or a harder treat I might use a more fragrant treat but for general training purposes I will use my dog's dry Kibble for this trick as well as other tricks. So to review it's ok to use a treat to get your dog's attention before the trick and it keeps them calm and lets them know something is coming."
