Summary: There are plastic bowling balls, polyurethane balls, and resin balls. Learn how to bowl with different types of bowling balls from a semi-pro bowler in this free video lesson on bowling strikes and spares.
"Now in this clip we're going to discuss the different types of balls there are. There's probably about five or six, but we're going to go over the three basic ones, the most common. The most common ball is a plastic ball. The pros use plastic balls to make spares because they go straight, it doesn't grip the lane, so it has a tendency to stay on a straight line. No matter how much you try to hook it, it's very hard to hook a plastic ball. Now, a regular polyurethane is what I use. It's a mid-range ball, it doesn't hook as much as a resin ball, but that's a very good ball, and most league bowlers bowl with a polyurethane, I'd say probably eighty percent. Then you go with a resin ball, which is rough like sandpaper. You throw the ball, it hooks hard, hooks drives in. You need a lot of speed to keep that resin ball in the pocket. Most professionals use a resin ball in certain conditions. There are different conditions on the lanes that you use different balls for, so it's necessary to have three or four different types of balls on any given lane at any given time."
