"For our Fourth of July cake we're going to make an American flag that's going to drape over the whole cake like this. Now I'm making a pattern. What you probably want to do that is to make a pattern to just check the size of the flag that you need to make, and I just cut that out of a piece of baking paper and just sort of, don't really lay it on the cake but just check it for size. So we'll start with rolling out a base of white fondant that we're going to make the size of our pattern. And to roll out the fondant you want to put a good amount of confectioner's sugar, dust your surface with confectioner's sugar, and we'll roll out our white fondant to the size of our pattern. When you're rolling the fondant you want to keep the surface dusted with confectioners sugar. So you want to check that once in a while and move what you're rolling to make sure that it isn't sticking to the surface. Make that a little bit wider. Okay that's good. Next we'll roll out a piece of blue to put in the corner here, and while you're working on something else you want to just cover this piece that you're setting aside with a piece of plastic wrap. The plastic wrap will help keep it from drying up while you're working on something else. Next we'll take some of this nice intensely colored blue and we'll roll that out and make the corner piece for our flag with the star cutouts. This is a little too much. And again, while you're rolling it out you want to dust the surface frequently and make sure that it's not sticking, and you should roll it out to about an eighth of an inch thick, and use a nice straight knife. Just cut yourself the square for the corner of our flag. And then I'm going to take a small star cookie cutter, and you might want to dip that in a little bit of the confectioners sugar, and we'll cut out little stars and the white of the flag will show through the star cutouts. Use a toothpick to poke the stars out of there, and you may want to save these stars to use in another place for decoration. Okay you want to let that dry for a little bit. Just a little bit until we transfer it to our white flag. Just so that it won't move so much. It'll stiffen up as it dries."
