on 11/29/2009 NO NO NO! Do not roll over on your foot like that to Maya. It's horrible for your ankles, and it's just wrong: a correct Maya is driven from the obliques. Raising the heel of the working foot or performing the move en releve are both acceptable, but those should come after the basic technique with both heels flat on the floor and your obliques working. For a demonstration of correct Mayas, try to find video of Jamila or Suhaila Salimpour doing them -- they named the movement. Asharah also demonstrates them correctly in Modern Tribal Bellydance.

"The next thing I want to show you is the Maya. Again you want to make sure your are in proper position, you want to make sure you are tucked under. You want to make sure you knees are bent and actually on this one, you can bend just a little bit more. Give you a little bit more lift on your hips. So again what you want to do, is you want to bring your hip up and down, up and down. I usually tell my students that are first starting out, to bring their hip up with their heel, so bring the heel up, bring the heel down. Heel up and down, you practice that first. Heel up, down, heel up and down. Just get that hip going up and down, up and down. From there you want to bring it up, you want to push your hip out to the side. I'm almost going to roll slightly on the side of my foot and come back down flat. So again, when I'm up, I'm going to come down on the side of my foot and up. So push up, push your hip out, your foot's about halfway down now and bring it down flat. Once your foot flat you should be in neutral position again, bring it up, push out, and down. Up, out and down. Again, from the side you bring your foot up, you push it out, foot coming down and neutral as it hits bottom. Bring it up, out and down. We're going to smooth out that side now. You're going to do, bring the foot up, push the hip out, and down. Make sure you're in your correct posture. Now we're going to add the other side. Bring your foot up, and down, up and down, up and down. Now we're going to push out, push out the side, rolling down that foot, down around to neutral. Up, out and down. Up, out and down. Be very conscious of your upper body, you don't want to be jumping all over the place with it. Now we're going to smooth it out. Bring your hip up, out and down, as that hits bottom, bring this foot up, out and down. As that one hits bottom, bring this one up, out and down. Up, out and down. And we'll just smooth out your Maya. Again to get a little bit more, if you get a little bit more bend in your knees, the bigger your hips are going to look. Keep your upper body very isolated, you have a beautiful Maya."
