"The next thing I want to talk to you about is improvisation. Improvisation is not like choreography where you have the dance completely planned out before going on to perform. Improv is something that you do on the spot and it comes out from inside you. Some advice that I can give you ahead of time, is make sure you know your music very well. If you're dancing to a live band, make sure you request a song that you know very well and know you know how to perform it correctly. Make sure it's by the same artist that you know. A couple of things with improv, make sure before going out you do have some combos that you can fall back on if and when you do get stuck. A great way to practice improv is to have someone videotape you. That way, you can see if you're doing the same moves over and over and over again. Some dancers tend to fall back on dance moves that they know very well or that they really like to do. So to prevent this, just practice with a videotape and just perfect your dance. Improv is something that comes from within you and it comes out right at the moment. So just let it happen, go with the moment, and whatever comes naturally to you, just go ahead and do it and enjoy your dance."
