"In this clip we'll talk about what may cause a phobia. The truth of the matter is no one knows exactly what causes or triggers a phobia. And this is hard for a lot of people to deal with. One of the things you want to know is that what we do know. We do know that phobias have been linked to traumatic events, changes in body chemistry such as hormone levels rising or dropping, changes in brain functions and chemicals. We also know that a parent’s phobia can sometimes be linked to a child's phobia. So maybe something that your mom was afraid of spiders, that might be why you kind of are afraid of spiders as well. But no one knows an exact cause, which can be very frustrating when you're trying deal with these feelings of why am I so afraid of this thing that everybody else seems to be doing find with. But not knowing doesn't mean that we don't know how to treat phobias."
