"To get started on our rib crochet we're going to take our yarn and of course you can use any weight of yarn that you like. Just make sure it's proportionate to your needle. I have a bigger needle because it'll give me a looser stitch and really help to show you the detail that's in our rib crochet. So you're going to take the end of your yarn. You're going to wrap it around your finger and pull it back behind that loop. We're going to get this little pretzel shape. Now with your needle what you're going to do is you're going to hook that piece of yarn right there, hold onto your end and pull it up, and that's how we make our first loop. Now you're going to keep your loop on your needle. And for this particular pattern, to get it this particular width we're going to crochet 13 times. And the reason why it's 13 is because we're doing a double crochet the last two are automatically going to go up. So their not going to be part of the width. The last two are going to go up so it's actually going to only be 11 across. So what you're going to do is you're just going to start out with your basic chain. You've got one loop. Pull your yarn through, that's 2, do it again, now we've got two chains. And this is number 3, number 4, number 5 and just keep working your hand up the chain. Number 6, number 7, number 8, number 9, and number 10, 11, which is about how wide it's going to be, 12 and 13. And there we go. We have our basic chain so now we can start working on our rib crochet design."
