Crochet, similar to knitting, consists of pulling loops of yarn through other loops of yarn in order to create fabric. The difference between crocheting and knitting however, is that in crochet only one loop is active at a time, and a crochet hook is used instead of knitting needles. Crocheting became popular in Europe in the early 1800's and has gone through several periods of popularity in the recent past, with a revival of handcrafts and do it yourself projects. There are a variety of crochet stitches, and when combined with brightly colored or white yarn, a crochet fan can create a wide range of beautiful fabrics to decorate their home or give away as a unique gift. A small and simple crochet project is the crinkle scrunchie. This creative hair accessory makes perfect gifts for friends and family. In this free instructional crochet video series, learn the appropriate stitches for a crocheted scrunchie and see the variety of patterns you can experiment with. For girls of all ages, the crocheted crinkle scrunchie is a great beginner's project.
"Now, what we are going to do is we're going to do something that looks a little bit more like a standard scrunchie. It's got all these little crinkles in it. Just a nice crinkled up scrunchie. So, what we're going to do is we're going to start the way that we start every single other piece we use with a rubber band. We're going to take our yarn at the end of it and we're going to wrap it around our finger and bring it back behind there. We get this little pretzel shape. We're going to take your yarn and put your hook right there on that piece and pull it down. That's how we make our first loop. Now with this loop, on our needle, we're going to take it to our rubber band and go ahead and put your needle through; like this circle part right here. Wrap your yarn around your fingers like that. You wrap your yarn around to where you've got two pieces and you grab another piece to pull it through right there. That's how we attach. Now, when it comes to this design I still like to stick with the double crochet. So, I'm going to chain up one and up two. We're going to start it the same way with the set of double crochets. The only thing that is really different about this is as we're going along not only are we going to push it down and make sure that we cover every bit of this rubber band, but we're going to add a whole lot extra. So, as you're doing your double crochets, just as you work it around, you want to make sure their really tight to the rubber band, because you need to have a lot of extra columns to get it to crinkle up. So, just keep pushing and you want them to kind of V up like that. So, just keep pushing them real close together at the base and until you get all the way around they'll still be flat up top, but you just want to keep working and keep working until you start to build up a nice little crinkle."
