"The primary tool used to cut coves or the depression areas on a lathe is what is called a spindle gouge. This is an example of a 1 inch spindle gouge with what is called a fingernail grind on it. It is a fingernail grind based off the shape and you have the edges brought up on each side that are sharpened on to each side. The spindle gouge can be extremely varied in its shape depending on the size of the items that you use and the detail. This particular one is used if you are dealing with miniature type items or if you are going to be cutting something that is less than 1/4 of an inch across. One other variation on the spindle gouge is this one with a very long arm and it is called a long and strong. If for some reason you are going to be forming a shape that the tool is well off the edge of the tool rest this will allow you a lot of support to keep the vibration down."
