"An alternative to face plates and drive center for holding your work and driving it are what they call a four jaw scroll chuck. What these chucks do is contract or expand all 4 jaws at one time. This particular model works through the use of a single key. A similar model, this one works off a system of pins where you put the 2 levers in and by holding one and moving the other you can open and contract the jaws. The advantage of these systems are that the jaws are interchangeable. You can go from working with a jaw as small as these up to putting on a face plate. These are called a coal type jaw for holding bowls. This type jaw is used for holding long items up to a foot long without support on the lathe and you also have a set of jaws here that will hold a number of different types of diameters of wood."
