Summary: With a diamond-shaped frame and cable brakes, learn how to identify the class English 3-speed bicycle in this free video from an experienced vintage bicycle dealer.
"The next style bike you should be able to identify is the classic English 3-speed. They're made in England. This is a Raleigh. This is a BSA. You'll see it's got the diamond-shaped frame. The men's cycle has what's called a top tube and the woman's does not. The top tube goes down like this. They both have this 3-speed thumb shifter, cable brakes. You can shift these while you're stopped. It's very convenient if you're riding in traffic. These are extremely popular as collectibles, but also as commuter cycles. What's unique about this men's Raleigh is the rod brakes. They're not cable activated but your braking is activated through rods. They're heavy. They're cumbersome. They are hard to keep tuned up properly, but they're really cool and really popular. The men's also has a classic brook saddle, a leather seat. People collect these. People use them. They're extremely comfortable. It doesn't look like it has a lot of spring and it really doesn't but the leather, although it's thick and hard, gives you enough - there is enough flexibility to make it a very comfortable seat."
