"So, there is even a foreground beyond this because these angels are supposed to be closer to us than the guy who's in the picture. So, now I should show you just a little bit of my own work because I want to talk to you about color. So, here's my favorite; this is my favorite quote from the bible. I like doing gems. I like the whole diet; this is the food of the spirit so I'm sort of looking like fruit here. What I've done is these started out as black letters; these initial letters. Then I actually just put paint over them and got that richness. Obviously, you know, I've used a lot of color in this. So, that's another example of the use of fancy letters, versals. I would call this, this is another color copy of part of a piece that I did quite a while back. This is; these are also, OK, they're Roman capitals, but nah I'm going to go ahead and say they're more like versals at this point, especially these initial letters. This decoration here, this is what is a takeoff on the acanthus leaf. The acanthus leaf is a very typical decorative element in illumination. Illumination means adding color and light to a manuscript."
