What make an A an A? It's the crossbar. That crossbar is what we would be referring to as a distinguishing characteristic. It is that part of the letter and how simple and beautiful it is that tells us that this is an A, and for example not part of and N. So let's look more closely at the A. Here's the one I just gave you. An A with some clothes on it. This is the skeletal A. Notice that what I did was to let that crossbar on the A be a little bit below the geometric center. Now the reason for that is because of this shape in here. And I'm going to talk about that a little bit more a little bit later. But what I want to show you now is this special little card that I've made which has an A on it. And then I'm go to turn it over and I'm going to show you that there are three words that I've chosen as special words having to do with the A. One of them or the whole alphabet rather, and one of them is the word attention, yes you are going to have to pay a lot of attention to what you are doing when you calligraph. Awareness, you are going to have to be aware of everything that's happening when you calligraph. And the word action because I want you to understand and appreciate how much of an action lettering is. It's not just my hand, you're going to see that when I do a letter it's the whole arm, but what you're going to feel when you start doing it yourself regardless of whether the letter that you make is small or this big, is you're going to feel your whole entire body working to make that letter come out. So that's what I have to say about the A.
