Summary: Mylar is a good material to use for stencils because of its durability. Learn how to make and use airbrush stencils in this free hobby video.
"Okay, we've been doing some stencils. We took you through the "beginner stencil" to show you how to make them, and we talked about the poster board. Poster board is probably one of the most inexpensive, if you have to buy it, things to use. A lot of people use this for stencils because it's cheap, you can buy it in a package, you can buy big sheets, you can buy small sheets, and it's, overall, it's pretty good to make a stencil with, especially if you're going to use it over and over again. Only trouble with it is, whenever you make your stencil, maybe you get a little too much glue on it if you're using glue, and guess what happens, if you pull it off the shirt...it tears. And then your stencil's either no good or you're fixing it with tape like I've done thousands of times. Another good thing to use is a Mylar. This here is actually cut by a laser for me, and you can get this at your local art store, or you can use acetate. The only thing you've got to be careful with, with plastics is, if you use it in an automotive paint, sometimes it will react with the plastic and cause it to wrinkle up. Another thing is if you're near a hospital or some kind of doctor's office that's got an X-ray machine; you can go in there and say "Hey, do you have X-rays that's been ruined, no good, maybe been overexposed or anything like that"? They're just going to throw them in the trash. They're not harmful to you, they're not going to hurt you, they don't have any radiation in them, you can use this to cut your stencils out, you can use an Exacto knife, or you can use a stencil burner. If you contact me, I can give you more information about making these plastic more durable stencils. Thank you."
