"During this segment we are going to look at the spindle gouge. The spindle gouge is probably the most versatile tool to use in shaping the spindle. You can do both coves, the depressions into the wood or beads, the round portion. The basic grind of a spindle gouge is what is called a finger nail grind. You can either have, this is about a medium style finger nail and you can also go to one that is a little bit more sharper angle. The sharper the angle the more detail you can get the less of an angle, the larger type of shapes you can have. It is also ground at a 35 degree angle. This gives it a plus or minus of about 5 degrees. Less of an angle makes it easier to do smoothing cuts and the steeper angle you can get a little more detail into what you are doing. The spindle gouge you will also find is not quite as deep as the bowl gouge."
