"In using a spindle for, excuse me, in using a scraper for spindle work, the technique is a little bit different on how you use it. With a gouge or a skew you're typically working above the tool rest. With a scraper on the other hand, because you're cutting with a little bit of a burr, you're actually going in, with the tool raised, placed down below, and your handle raised high. In cutting a cove, you want to go in from the center, and rotate the tool to both sides. You start with a shape of a tool that's a little bit smaller than the radius you want to cut. You bring the tool in, and bring it up, bring it up and start your cut. And then start rotating side to side, until you get the depth and the shape that you're looking for. Again, you need to keep the cutting edge down, so that you're getting with, your cutting with the burr. If you happen to find that the work is coming out rough, you're going to find that the burr is probably worn. What you need to do is touch it up on the grinder. You just hit to the grinder, side to side, and then you should be good to go."
