"During this step we'll take a look at getting a rough shape on the bowl. What I've done just before this step and part of the roughing process is I've smoothed off the base so that it is roughly square and there is no rough edges. In rough turning the shape you want to use the sheering cut but in this case I'm turning it 45 degrees, dropping the handle and bringing it towards me. As you can see I'm taking off about 1/4 of an inch to maybe 3/8's of an inch of material at a time. Once I get the corner knocked down, bring the tool rest in a little more and just continue the shape, going a in a little bit and get ready for a base and bring it around. The sheering cut with the bowl is probably one of the fastest ways of moving material. It doesn't give you an absolutely best finish but you do remove a lot of the material."
