"For this particular bowl what we'll be using to form the outside chafe, roughing out the blank, is a screw center. Essentially it is just a chuck that has a heavy duty screw pointing out the end with a stub nose. We take the blank with the pre-drilled hole, put it over the screw and turn it. When we are down near, when we're almost all the way in what we'll do is I'll take the spindle lock to stop it from rotating the hole spindle and turn it on as tightly as possible. You don't, between the base of this chuck and the blank, you don't want to have any space. If there's any kind of a gap the wood is doing to work its way loose as you're turning it. So you screw it on as tightly as you can to get the blank flat up against the screw chuck."
