Woodturning is my dream. I was introduced to woodturning 25 years ago when I took an introductory class for a 5-in-1 machine my wife encouraged me to buy. For the next 20 years, I...read more

Series Summary

Woodworkings origin dates back to around 1300BC when the Egyptians first created a two-person lathe. One person would turn the wood with a rope while the other used a sharpened tool to cut shapes in the wood. The Romans used a turning bow to improve the Egyptian design. Germany, Britain and France followed with early bow lathes. A pedal was used to replace the hand-operated turning method, allowing the craftsman's hands to hold the woodturning tools freely. In this free crafts video series, let a woodturning expert show you how to take a blank and turn it into a finished bowl. Watch as he takes you through each step from mounting a blank to rough shaping the outside of the bowl. Turn the bowl around and start to carve out the inside. Learn how to set the depth of a bowl, sand it down and then apply finish. Woodturning is a fun hobby to learn, so let our expert help you begin.

Video Transcript

"During this series we're going to be showing you how to turn a basic bowl shape from a block of rough stock. What we want to cover are the techniques of bringing the block to round, providing you an outside shape and a mounting portion for the base. We'll also be taking a look at the hollowing, the different types of hallowing techniques used to form the bowl. We will also look at the controls that you need to make sure that you have a uniform thickness of the bowl going through, and the different types of cuts that you will use in setting the bowl up. The best thing to take a look at when you're going to do bowl making is not to go after the big salad bowl in the beginning. Make yourself something small. It doesn't have to be that large, just to get the feel of how the tools cut and how the, how you'll be shaping the bowl."
