"The metal rib can be used to smooth out surfaces and again any time you are applying the rib to the outer surface your left hand is on the inside pushing out slightly so you have a nice even application of pressure to the piece. Repeating this step using equal pressure is very helpful. The wooden rib is useful in trimming down excess clay at the bottom and clearing off excess clay from the bat head itself. On occasion the lip of the bottle is irregular and using your left hand as support and holding the needle tool as a pencil and running it in on an angle until you feel it touch your finger and then lifting it up straightaway will make a nice smooth even edge with the sponge you can round out that edge."
