One of the ways to tell if the clay is centered is if you look directly over it it should appear not moving at all. The other method is holding your finger on the edge of the clay. It should not be touching in any one spot. Those are the two methods to tell if you've centered the clay exactly. In making the bottle form, the diameter of the centered clay is important, going to determine the diameter of the bottle, the bottom diameter of the bottle. If you want a wide based bottle you'll make this initial form wider. If you want a narrow based bottle, you'll make the form narrower. Gripping the clay lightly, and wetting your hands, you'll make a small hole with your thumbs in the clay. Filling the hole with water, you'll go directly down to the bottom, leaving less than a half inch of clay at the bottom.
