"In forming the lip of the bowl, it's important to wet the clay. Lip really is, serves two purposes. One it, visually says, "this is the end of the bowl", so it doesn't look like it keeps going visually. And secondly, the changing direction on the lip, where the thicker are on the lip, keeps the bowl in a symmetrical shape during the drying and the firing stages. So, in order to make the lip, left hand is on the inside at the three o'clock position and your right hand is on the outside at the three o'clock position, with the clay moist and wet. And simply what you'll do is index finger going in, on your right hand, index finger pushing down with your left hand and the lip is a changing direction and smoothing it out on top is the last step."
