How to Wedge Potter's Clay

Love the idea of having the canvas over the table. Our table at school is so beat up that we can only use parts of it. Thanks!

This is a wedging table. It is constructed out of three to four inches of plaster with the wood frame and it has a canvas cover. It is an absorbent surface which takes the moisture out of the clay and prevents the clay from sticking to the table. When we're wedging the clay choose a soft piece of clay about the size of a large apple and pat it into a cone shape with a slightly rounded bottom and what we are going to do is stand directly over the piece using our upper body leverage not strength and push down on the piece and roll it back slightly, push down and roll it back. If we are doing everything correctly you should see pleats of clay up against each other, not overlapping each other. We want to distribute the moisture content throughout the clay and take out any air bubbles in the clay by the wedging procedure.
